THALA makes dreamy pop earworms with shoegaze undertones. I love this duet with Bearcubs - it feels like the perfect track for the start of August.

Small Black - No Stranger

Small Black got their start recording in lead singer Josh Kolenik’s uncle’s surfboard workshop in 2009. It’s no wonder they make music that’s giving chillwave summer vibes. The entire Limits of Desire album is no skips - definitely check it out!

Cat Power - Sea of Love

This song is so comforting and calming. It’s a cover of Phil Phillips hit from the 1950s, and I love Cat Power’s reimagination of the track and use of the autoharp on it. It reminds me of those little toy pianos for kids, giving the song a young-love feel to it.

Portugal. The Man - So American

This acoustic version of “So American” features the coolest use of coffee shop accessories I’ve ever seen. Coffee beans, sugar jars, spoons…all being used to create the beat. It’s a top tier performance from Portugal. The Man - I highly recommend going down the rabbit hole on other La Blogotheque/Take Away Show videos on YouTube for some major indie sleaze nostaligacore.

Rhye - Open

I love the smooth vocals on this track, and I’m a sucker for a string opening, too. Romantic vibes for sure!

Eisley - Golly Sandra

I was listening to “Mouse” by mary in the junkyard the other day and the lead singer’s voice made this song resurface in my brain for some reason. I was so happy when this track popped into my head because I was obsessed with it in high school. I love the slide guitar and just how lighthearted it feels. Eisley 4eva!

Dr. Dog - Where’d All the Time Go?

When I realized this song came out in 2010 I had a mini existential crisis because wdym this is sixteen years old already?! This song sounds like it came out in the 60s but could also be brand new. I spent a good part of yesterday trying to figure out what these lyrics mean: “she gets dressed up like a pillow, so she’s always in bed.” Any guesses?

Michael Nau - Love Survive

Metrofique - Chain That Ends

Metrofique was a band local to San Diego that I fell in love with back in the late 00s. They make cozy indie folk-pop that’s comforting on a lazy Sunday afternoon.

Get Back Loretta - Pretty Song

“Pretty Song” by Get Back Loretta is peak 2000s acoustic pop. They were another local band that I actually went to high school with. I love the simplicity in the layered guitars on this track.

Pinback - Loro

This song was on all my mixtapes growing up - I can’t believe it’s from the 90s. To me, it feels just as current now as it did first hearing it in the 2000s. Pinback used to play $6 concerts after the horse races in San Diego. I wish shows were still that cheap!

BANKS is, and will always be, that girl. She is so unapologetic in her songwriting and such a fierce performer. III is a powerful album featuring this banger of a track, that’s full of prowess and bold bass and synth lines.

Now, Now - SGL

This song is another summer-feeling track for me. It’s got those bright acoustic guitars and the calm, relaxed energy of longer days. Now, Now is not a band to sleep on!

Arlie - big fat mouth

There’s something very youthful about this track from Arlie. I like the dissonance in this song, how it’s rooted in vulnerability within the lyrics, yet the melody is so light and upbeat.

Young Summer - Waves That Rolled You Under

Young Summer is a Nashville-based songwriter and artist. She makes dreamy pop music that’s both ethereal and poignant. Her album Siren is a personal favorite of mine.

Geographer - The Myth Of Youth

Geographer is a top five favorite artist for me. I think I’ve seen him live at least 6 times (maybe more?) in two states and two countries. He is such an underrated artist and makes incredible alternative pop/electronic music. Geographer blends synthetic sounds with touches of cello, which makes his music stand out.

This song is so comforting with the soft acoustic guitars and calm vocals from Torrini. It feels like I should be listening to this on a cozy summer evening in the garden of an Italian villa.

Yuna - Island

When this first came out I was obsessed with the album art, I just love the use of color on her head scarf. The music on this album is equally as great. Some of my faves are “Tourist” and “Favourite Thing.”

Sigur Rós - Ég anda

This album is my go-to for when I want to wind down and relax. It’s very cinematic and beautiful. I almost always listen to it at least a few times through in one sitting because it’s that good.

Mating Ritual - Game

“Game” is always a song that’s in heavy rotation for me. It’s got this chill, downtempo vibe and interesting lines like “I’m turning bottles into oceans // I’ll tell you whatever I want and let you think it’s the truth.” This band sadly stopped releasing music last year, but they have six studio albums so there’s plenty of catalog to dig through. My personal favorite is their debut album How You Gonna Stop It? One time I asked the band to sign my vinyl at a show, and for some reason the bassist just signed it “Amy” and handed it back to me, lol…bruh…cool cool cool.

Max Frost - Let Me Down Easy

When was the last time you heard this bop? I honestly forgot how good this song is. The bridge is awesome with the piano and horns section. It just makes the track burst with color. I also love “Nice and Slow” and “Back In The Summer” from Frost.

DOPE LEMON - Stonecutters

If you know me you know I loooove a banjo moment. It’s one of my favorite instruments. This song just feels like a summer drive down PCH to me. I’ve seen Dope Lemon live quite a few times, but one of my favorites memories was from when I lived in London. They played a small show at Rough Trade East in Shoreditch, and I ended up running into them at a pub around the corner after. It was such a cool moment for me because I’ve been a fan of Angus and Julia Stone for years. I was lucky enough to get on the list for their Brixton Academy show the next night and they were great live. My other fav track from them is “Coyote” off the same album.

Lola Marsh - Morning Bells

BOY - Skin

I saw this band perform at a tiiiiiny venue on a college campus right after the album dropped in 2013. Even though their music is quite unassuming, they put on an electrifying show. I love how this song feels stripped back while still packing a punch. The entire Mutual Friends album is full of bops.

Jack Peñate - Pull My Heart Away

This song instantly brings me back to my college graduation trip to Paris. I met some Parisian exchange students during my senior year, and we quickly became besties so I went to visit them for a few days. I ended up with the flu for most of it but I still had the time of my life. Spotify only allowed a few playlists in offline mode back then, and this song was on one of said playlists. I vividly remember feeling like absolute shit on a packed train to Versailles, standing-room only, for a good two hours with this song playing on loop to get me through. The bright guitars can really lift your spirits, let me tell ya.

Fanfarlo - Luna

Black Cab Sessions used to be a place where I discovered so many great artists in the late 00s. It was this concept where artists would perform in the back of a London cab, all in one live take. Sometimes they would pack up to six band members in one of those things, and then the film crew as well. One of my favorite performances was of “Luna” by Fanfarlo. Halfway through the song, lead singer Simon Balthazar jumped out of the cab and ran up a hill at a nearby park. It felt very whimsical and spontaneous to watch. I love the tempo change at the end of this track. I tried to find the video but it looks like they’ve all been taken down. :( RIP Black Cab Sessions. You will be missed.

On An On - Ghosts

Someone commented this song on my TikTok the other day and I felt SEEN. Sometimes it’s like I’m on an island with the music I listen to, so it’s always really nice to find someone else out there who likes the same artists as me. I love how music has a way of doing that, it can make us feel connected to complete strangers in a moment of shared experience and understanding. I still revisit this album from On An On often. I love the drum style on this particular track. Some follow ups to check out off this album are “Every Song” and “The Hunter.” Enjoy!

Wild Cub - Thunder Clatter

This song always puts me in a good mood. Lead singer Keegan DeWitt made the shift into composing for film and TV shortly after the band released their debut album Youth, so unfortunately they were a short-lived group but I still just love the feel of the band’s music. Another favorite of mine is DeWitt’s solo EP that came out in 2010. I still revisit it often.

j ember is the king of cranking out music. He is constantly releasing new bangers and I am so here for it. “Bargain Flights” has some sad lyrics under the veil of an upbeat melody. My take on it, it’s about a toxic relationship, like the line “Hanging pictures on a dead end road.” He’s trying to build something deep and meaningful even though he knows it’s not going to work out because this person is “loveless from the start.” Yikes.

Annie DiRusso - Legs

Annie DiRusso makes that grungy indie rock that’s reminiscent of the 90s. A bonus, more down-tempo favorite of mine is her collab with Ruston Kelly on “Wearing Pants Again.” Their voices sound great together.

Fickle Friends are one of those bands that’s really perfected the art of the indie pop banger. “Million” will instantly lift your mood.

The Greeting Committee - Ada

I forgot this song existed!! I love their different take on the typical chorus, making it instrumental instead of with lyrics. I love the message behind this track and the music video is definitely worth a watch.

Gardens & Villa - Black Hills

“Black Hills” is one of my all-time favorite tracks. It makes me think of driving down the 101 during dusk on a warm summer night. I saw Gardens & Villa a few years ago at a small venue in San Diego and their show was such a blast. The band had an infectious energy (and they were really cool to talk to after!).

Sea Lemon - Cynical

VÉRITÉ - by now

VÉRITÉ is such an underrated artist. She makes the most dreamy dark pop music. I got to see her a few years ago at the House of Blues side stage, and honestly her vocals were absolute perfection. If you’re a fan of BANKS, VÉRITÉ is for you. “by now” is one of my favorite tracks by her.

LISP - Good 2 Yourself

This song instantly puts me in a good mood! Fun fact - the bands used to be called “Life In Sweatpants” but they shortened it to LISP eventually. I definitely spend a lot of my life in sweatpants, lol. This is the side project of the band Sjowgren (also worth checking out)!
